Let’s face it; state-of-the-art is a catchy, sexy phrase. Many people want their possessions to be “state-of-the-art” as they feel it gives them some kind of advantage. It may be the biggest, highest-resolution television on the market, or a brand new set of custom-fitted golf clubs.

Whatever the case may be, state-of-the-art has made its way into mainstream society as a term everyone uses to describe the latest and greatest things designed to make our lives easier.

However…

When it comes to your prosthesis, state-of-the-art is oftentimes not worth the trouble. In fact, it calls into question the meaning of state-of-the-art.

Normally, people thinking of something that is state-of-the-art as being the latest, greatest technology that is in some way, shape or form supposed to improve their life. But, when talking about prosthetics devices, state-of-the-art may not be the best option for most amputees, and here is why:

1. Expense. State-of-the-art prosthetic devices are expensive, and not attainable for the average person. For most, the benefits of a state-of-the-art device (like something James Bond might use) doesn’t justify the costs involved.

2. Devices not suited to the amputee. State-of-the-art technology is often not as customizable as other prosthetic devices, and thus amputees likely will not get a prosthetic device that fits well for an affordable price. In addition, certain “high-tech” devices may not be well-suited to someone’s needs. After all, what if a manual laborer needs a prosthetic device? Do you think a device that cannot get wet or dirty would meet his or her needs?
