How Long Do I Have to Wait to Get My Prosthesis?

waiting for prosthesisWhether you have already had your amputation, or have it scheduled in the near future, one of the main questions we receive at Georgia Prosthetics is, “How long do I have to wait after my surgery to receive my prosthesis?” In this brief article, we are going to go over a few of the points that have an effect on when you will be able to be fitted for (and actually receive) your prosthetic device.

Clearance from the Doctors

At Georgia Prosthetics, we work with your doctors in order to ensure that you are not fitted for your prosthetic device until your body is ready. In all circumstances, your surgical wounds must be properly healed, as well as your residual limb. Healing time varies on a case by case basis, as everyone experiences different recovery times.

Your Temporary Prosthesis

In some situations (if the patient wishes) we will fit our patients with a temporary prosthetic device, which of course will not fit with the strength and security of your custom-fitted prosthetic, but will provide a temporary solution until your permanent prosthesis is fitted.

It Won’t Take Long!

We understand that getting fitted for, and receiving your permanent, custom-fitted prosthesis is one of your most important priorities right now, and at Georgia Prosthetics we make a commitment to take care of each and every patient. Always remember that the most crucial person in the entire process is you. You have to make up your mind to work with your doctor and prosthetics provider to ensure success.

At Georgia Prosthetics, we will do everything in our power (including being your biggest fan and motivator) to ensure that once you receive your prosthesis, you learn how to use it effectively in order to improve the quality of your life.
