Are Prosthetic Arms and Legs Waterproof?
By Georgia Prosthetics

Whether you are an avid swimmer, you like relaxing on the beach, or you simply want to know for hygiene purposes (like bathing and showering), many of our patients ask us the question, “Is my prosthetic going to be waterproof?”
It’s a great question and one we felt needed to be addressed so we can better educate not only our patients at Georgia Prosthetics, but any amputees out there who have the same question.
Waterproof or not?
For many patients the thought of having to remove their prosthesis every time they need to take a bath, shower, or enjoy some fun outdoor water activities just isn’t realistic. However, the average prosthetic device is not waterproof.
So, what’s a person to do?
At this point, you have two options:
You can choose a prosthetic device that is waterproof.
You can buy a prosthetic limb cover that is vacuum sealed to protect your prosthesis.
For most patients, number two is the preferred option because it’s less expensive and still provides you with the functionality you want (which is to enjoy the water without damaging your prosthetic arm or leg).
What if I’m an avid swimmer or an athlete?
While most patients will find a better value in investing in a high-quality prosthetic cover to protect their prosthesis, if you’re a diehard athlete and enjoy swimming frequently, you may want to consider a more advanced, “state-of-the-art” prosthesis that does a better job of matching your lifestyle.
While these advanced devices are great, they are more expensive, which is why we encourage you to weigh your options carefully before making a decision.
Can you help me decide which prosthesis is right for me?
