By Georgia Prosthetics

Getting a prosthetic device for the first time is a major change that will require time and effort on your part. We are here to guide you through the process and make sure you love your prosthesis. Here are 5 common questions about prosthetics.
How soon can I get a prosthetic device?
Following your amputation, your doctor will determine when you can begin the process of getting a prosthesis. The residual limb will need to heal and the swelling will need to go down before we conduct your fittings to ensure the best possible fit. This process often takes a few weeks but will depend on your individual case.Is there a “learning curve” after getting a prosthetic device?
Yes. Getting a prosthesis will mean relearning how to complete the tasks necessary in daily life and adapting to life with a new limb. Eventually, these tasks will become much easier, but in the beginning, there is a definite learning curve. We will work with you the entire time and make any adjustments necessary to make sure your device is working for you. Our technicians will also guide you by employing prosthetics physical therapy, if needed. How natural will my prosthesis look and feel?
When properly fitted, today’s prosthetic devices are highly functional and more natural-looking than ever. Our experienced team members help patients select prostheses that are ideal for their activity levels and lifestyles. How often does a prosthesis need to be replaced?
Several factors will affect the lifetime of a prosthesis, such as changes in the patient’s weight, a change in the patient’s needs, and wear and tear on the device. In general, a prosthetic device can last months or years. Sometimes, only part of the device needs to be replaced, such as the socket. Will I be able to participate in sports and high-intensity activities?
If you have the right prosthesis, yes! Today’s extreme prosthetics can be designed to accommodate any activity, from running and jumping to skiing and swimming.
