How to Take Care of and Clean Your Lower Body Prosthesis
By Georgia Prosthetics

Your lower body prosthesis is an investment that, with proper care, should last several years. By taking a few simple precautions, you can extend the life of your prosthesis and avoid costly repairs.
Tips for Caring for a Lower Body Prosthesis
Do not attempt to make adjustments or repairs to your prosthesis on your own. Doing so can lead to expensive damage to your device and can also impair its ability to function properly, making it dangerous for you to use. Instead, contact our office and schedule an appointment. We are happy to fix your device to your liking.
When you first get your prosthesis, take time to learn the proper way to care for it. For example, some prosthetic feet can be adjusted by the patient, but only after he or she has learned the proper technique to do so.
You do not need to treat your prosthesis delicately, but it is wise to exercise common sense. Avoiding being too rough with your prosthesis can help lengthen its life.
Avoid using chemicals and other substances on your prosthesis. Prostheses should be cleaned lightly with a wet cloth and soapy water as necessary, as opposed to dunking it underwater. Never submerge your prosthesis!
Keeping your socket and liner clean is extremely important to prevent infections. Be sure to carefully follow the cleaning instructions for your particular socket and liner.
Be aware of how you are using your prosthesis. Are you more active than your device allows? If so, it may be time to move on to a new device that is better suited for your lifestyle.
When cared for properly, a prosthetic lower limb can serve you well for a long time. We encourage you to contact Georgia Prosthetics if you have any questions about how best to take care of your prosthesis.
