What to Expect at Your First Appointment at the Prosthetics Office

By Georgia Prosthetics

In many cases, a patient’s first appointment at a prosthetics office takes place a few weeks after the amputation. The patient is likely still adjusting to life without a limb, and the process of getting a prosthesis can be overwhelming. We at Georgia Prosthetics understand these issues, and we aim to make each patient’s first visit to our office as easy as possible.

What Happens During Your First Appointment

Much of the first appointment at our office will be devoted to getting a good understanding of what you need in a prosthesis. We’ll want to know whether you are most concerned with function or appearance (or both).

We’ll also need some insight into your lifestyle in order to recommend the best prosthesis; there are prosthetic devices available to enable you to participate in sports or to just simply complete basic tasks, so we need to understand your activity level and your goals.

Once we have an understanding of what you’re looking for, we can recommend the best prostheses for your needs. We provide a wide range of the best prostheses available, and we understand the benefits and considerations involved with them.

Will I Get Fitted for a Prosthesis on My First Visit?

If your residual limb’s swelling has decreased sufficiently, we may be able to begin the fitting process at your first appointment. This involves taking measurements and creating a cast that will be used to create your new device. It is important for us to wait to do these measurements until the residual limb is healed to ensure an accurate fit.

During your first appointment, you’ll also have time to discuss your expectations and ask any questions you may have.

Getting a prosthesis for the first time can be daunting, but we’re here to make the process as easy as possible. If you have recently undergone an amputation and you’re ready to take the first step toward regaining your independence and ability, we encourage you to contact our office and schedule your initial consultation.
