Will I Have a Hard Time Functioning With My New Prothesis?

By Georgia Prosthetics

Many of our patients have questions when they come in for their consultations. One of the questions we are most often asked is, “Will I have a hard time functioning with my new prosthesis?”

A prosthesis is designed to make it easier for you to function each day, not harder. However, there is certainly an adjustment period right after getting a prosthesis.

Learning to function with a prosthesis is just like any new skill in that it will take some time to master. With persistence, however, you will learn to use your prosthesis in ways that will enhance your life.

Tips for Getting Used to Your Prosthesis to Function Better

  • Set goals for yourself to accomplish in the days, weeks, and months after you get your prosthesis. This is a great way to stay on track and motivate yourself to accomplish as much as possible.

  • Some discomfort is to be expected as you get used to your prosthesis. Using a prosthesis often means using certain muscles in new ways, which can be uncomfortable at first. However, if you are experiencing pain or prolonged discomfort, schedule an appointment with our office. An adjustment may be necessary, or we can provide advice on how to make yourself more comfortable.

  • Our biggest tip? Be patient. Recognize that it will take some time to relearn how to accomplish tasks using your new prosthesis. Rather than expecting immediate success, realize that the adjustment period may be lengthy and don’t be too hard on yourself if certain tasks are difficult at first. Remind yourself that in time, you’ll be able to complete everyday tasks with ease.
